FR Webbing Material Guide

Not all fire retardant webbing is equal. The right material depends on your operating temperature, regulatory standard, and whether flame resistance must survive repeated washing.

Inherently FR · Premium

Aramid / Nomex® Webbing

Flame resistance is intrinsic to the fiber — it cannot burn away, wash out, or degrade. Turns to char instead of melting, preventing drip burns. The gold standard for life-safety applications.

  • LOI (Oxygen Index)≥ 28%
  • Max Continuous Temp250 °C (482 °F)
  • Tensile Strength (25mm)≥ 15 kN
  • FR DurabilityPermanent
  • Melting PointNone (chars at ~370 °C)
Best for: Firefighter PPE, rescue harnesses, arc flash protection, high-temp industrial environments.
Treated FR · High Strength

FR Nylon Webbing

High-tenacity nylon with a durable FR treatment achieving UL94 V-0. Retains nylon's superior abrasion resistance and energy-absorbing stretch while adding certified flame resistance.

  • Flammability RatingUL94 V-0
  • Tensile Strength (25mm)≥ 12 kN
  • Elongation at Break15–25%
  • FR Durability50+ washes (ISO 6330)
  • Operating TempUp to 120 °C
Best for: Fall arrest harnesses, tactical gear, safety slings, EN 361 compliant harnesses.
Treated FR · Low Elongation

FR Polyester Webbing

Superior UV resistance and lower elongation than FR Nylon, making it ideal for outdoor safety applications and static load-bearing uses. Excellent color retention even after prolonged UV exposure.

  • Flammability RatingUL94 V-0
  • Tensile Strength (25mm)≥ 10 kN
  • Elongation at Break8–14%
  • FR Durability50+ washes (ISO 6330)
  • UV ResistanceExcellent
Best for: Electrical utility lineman gear, outdoor safety barriers, lifting slings, fire-retardant lanyards.
Dual Protection · Specialty

FR + High-Visibility Webbing

Combines UL94 V-0 flame resistance with EN ISO 20471 fluorescent yarns for environments where workers face both fire and traffic/low-visibility hazards. Retroreflective strips available.

  • FR StandardUL94 V-0
  • Visibility StandardEN ISO 20471 Class 2/3
  • ColorsFluorescent Yellow / Orange
  • RetroreflectiveAvailable on request
  • Width Range20mm – 50mm
Best for: Road worker PPE, oil & gas, utility workers, emergency responders.

Where FR Webbing Is Required

Fire retardant webbing is a regulatory requirement — not an option — in these industries. TMG supplies FR webbing to OEMs and safety gear brands worldwide.

🧑‍🚒

Firefighter PPE

SCBA straps, escape harnesses, and turnout gear webbing requiring EN ISO 11612 and NFPA 1971 compliance.

🏗️

Fall Arrest & Harnesses

Full-body harnesses and lanyards for work at height near heat sources. EN 361 and ANSI Z359 compliant.

Electrical & Arc Flash

Lineman webbing and arc flash suits where a single arc event can cause catastrophic burns.

🛢️

Oil & Gas Industry

Offshore platform safety harnesses, lifting slings, and barrier tapes operating near ignition sources.

🚒

Rescue & Emergency Services

Swift water rescue, confined space rescue harnesses, and technical rope rescue applications.

🏭

Industrial Safety

Welding, foundry, and furnace environments where molten metal splash or open flame is present.

Global FR Standards We Support

Different markets have different regulatory frameworks. We provide full test documentation for whichever standard your product must certify to.

How Custom FR Webbing Is Made

From fiber selection to final test report — a transparent look at our manufacturing process.

Fiber Selection

Choose between inherently FR (Aramid/Nomex) or treated FR (Nylon/Polyester) based on your performance requirements and budget.

Weave Design

Specify width (10–100mm), weave pattern, and breaking strength. Jacquard logos or hi-vis stripes can be integrated.

FR Treatment

For treated FR webbing, a proprietary flame-retardant chemistry is applied and heat-cured for durability through 50+ wash cycles.

Quality Testing

Each production batch is tested in-house for tensile strength, UL94 flame spread, and wash durability before shipment.

Documentation

Full test reports, material safety data sheets, and compliance declarations are provided with every order.

Frequently Asked Questions

Technical questions from PPE buyers and safety gear manufacturers.

What standards does your fire retardant webbing meet?
Our FR webbing meets UL94 V-0 (the highest flammability rating), NFPA 70E, EN ISO 11612, and OEKO-TEX 100 standards. We provide full third-party test reports for each standard upon request. Additional certifications can be arranged for specific project requirements.
What is the difference between inherently FR and treated FR webbing?
Inherently FR webbing (e.g., Aramid/Nomex) has flame resistance built into the molecular structure of the fiber — it cannot wash out, wear off, or degrade. The material turns to char rather than melting or dripping, eliminating secondary burn hazards.

Treated FR webbing (e.g., FR Nylon, FR Polyester) has a chemical flame-retardant applied to the fiber surface. This is durable (rated to 50+ wash cycles per ISO 6330), but the protection is technically a treatment rather than an inherent property. For life-critical PPE, inherently FR materials are generally the preferred specification.
What widths and colors are available for FR webbing?
We manufacture FR webbing in widths from 10mm to 100mm (approx. 3/8" to 4"). Standard colors include black, navy blue, orange (fluorescent), yellow (fluorescent), olive, and tan. Custom colors with a Pantone match are available with a minimum order. Retroreflective strips and high-visibility fluorescent yarns can be woven in for dual-protection applications.
Can FR webbing also meet EN ISO 20471 high-visibility requirements?
Yes. We can weave high-visibility fluorescent yarns (yellow or orange) into FR webbing and optionally bond retroreflective tape to meet both EN ISO 11612 (flame resistance) and EN ISO 20471 Class 2/3 (visibility) simultaneously. This dual-function webbing is commonly specified for road construction workers, oil & gas field workers, and emergency responders.
What is the minimum order quantity for custom FR webbing?
The standard MOQ for custom FR webbing is 500 meters per color/specification. For standard in-stock FR webbing (FR Nylon in black, 25mm and 50mm), we can supply smaller quantities. For R&D sampling, we offer free samples (you cover shipping) — request one here.
How do I verify that FR webbing hasn't lost its flame resistance after washing?
For treated FR webbing, wash durability is certified at the production stage (50+ wash cycles per ISO 6330). We recommend a simple field verification: hold a small offcut sample horizontally over a flame for 3 seconds, then remove. A UL94 V-0 rated webbing should self-extinguish within 10 seconds with no flaming drips. For formal re-certification, send samples to an accredited textile testing lab (SGS, Intertek, Bureau Veritas).
Can you add our company logo or brand colors to FR webbing?
Yes. We offer jacquard weaving to incorporate logos, text, or patterns directly into the webbing structure — this doesn't compromise FR performance. Alternatively, screen printing can be applied but requires validation that the print chemistry doesn't reduce flame resistance. OEM/ODM services are available with custom packaging.
